Bucheonim Osin Nal @Bulguksa Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage site located at Mount Toham in Jinhyeon-dong, Gyeongju, this temple was built way back the golden age of Buddhism in the Silla Dynasty under King Kyeongdeok in 751 and completed in 774 by Prime Minister Kim Daeseong in honor of his parents.

“Bucheonim osin nal”, meaning the day when the Buddha came is celebrated in honor of the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama, on the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar. This year, South Koreans celebrated it last May 12.


Lotus shaped lanterns of vivid colors are hung all over the temple a month before the actual day of celebration.


Hundreds of believers flocked to the temple throughout the day to hang their own lanterns with their names and wishes in it.


Adrian and Dominique, travelers from the US, striking a pose under the lanterns, were so delighted of the fancy celebration.


The Dabotap, also known as the pagoda of many treasures is designated as a Korean National Treasure #20, built in 751 was ornamented with colorful lanterns during Buddha’s Birthday.

Original spots of the beams in most buildings of the temple were preserved.


The Buddha of Enlightenment is enshrined in the Birojeon, is made from gilt-bronze and considered as national treasure #26





Stone cairns can be seen behind the Birojeon Hall. In Buddhism, it is a form of worshipping and can also be a form of wishing for good fortune.





Although considered mainly as a shrine for the believers of Buddhism, the Bulguksa Temple is also a nice place for recreation which surroundings are captivating of its relaxing foliage and historical assets welcoming visitors of all walks of life.
